What will happen if I decide to take part?

If you are an adoptive parent I will begin my research by telephoning you. In the phone calls, I will ask you a few background questions about you and your family. I will also arrange to come and visit you in your home to interview you. This will not take more than an hour.

If you are an adopted child I will arrange with your adoptive parents a suitable time to come and visit you and ask you a few questions. We will also play a few fun research games. All this will not take longer than forty minutes.

What will I do with the information you have given me?

I will use the information to write a book called a thesis. I will also send you a summary of the research for you to read.

Will people be able to tell what things I've said?

I will use a different name for you so that people don't know which things you have said.

Will you tell anyone else what I've said?

I'm the only person who will know what you've told me. I'll only tell someone else unless something you say makes me worried that a child or young person is in danger. I will keep all the information locked in a file in the University so that no one else can see it.

What happens if I change my mind after I agree to take part?

You do not have to answer all the questions in the interview; you just have to tell me and we will stop or change the subject. You can also withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason. You can ask me to take out things that you have said after the interview. However, this does not apply to after the 1st July, 2014 as this will be too close to the deadline for my thesis.
